Torre La Mata

Torre La Mata is a coastal area located in Torrevieja. It is known for having unspoilt Spanish charm, while still providing every service you are used to. La Mata gives you the largest blue flag beach in the city, restaurants and pubs, and a great connection to all that lies around.
It is not commercialized like many other places, and this tranquillity made it very popular among Spanish locals as well. It is not quite busy as Torrevieja, but only a stone throw away. Many people come here looking for nature, a healthy climate, and golf. And whenever they want some action, it is happening just down the block.

Where is La Mata Located?

La Mata is a suburb of Torrevieja, On the Southern end of the Costa Blanca. It is the most Northern part of the city, bordered by the salt lakes. Its central location makes it easily accessible through the national N-332. It is very well-connected to all the towns around it and is only a 40-minute drive from Alicante airport.

What makes La Mata special?

The beaches

The long strip of La Mata beach is the biggest one in Torrevieja. It’s about 2 kilometres long and 50 metres wide. Filled with soft, light-yellow sand, it has been rewarded with the blue flag award for cleanliness and safety. The water is clear and full of fish.
The beach is equipped with rescue towers, medical services, changing cabins, toilets, leg showers, chairs and umbrellas, and a wooden floor leading up to the beach. This makes it disability friendly, and also perfect for families with young children. A promenade runs alongside the beach, with the restaurants and beach clubs.
At the South end of La Mata beach, we find a secluded beach of Cabo Cervera. It is a small bay of 100 metres long and 25 metres wide. It borders La Mata but is separated by rocks. This bay is more rocky and excellent for diving, snorkelling, or just enjoying the beach in a more private environment.
Behind Cabo Cervera beach lies a strip of rocky coastline. These coves are used by the locals to bathe and suntan. However, caution is necessary, they are not all suitable for swimming. They do make for a beautiful walk along the coast, stretching up to the next beach: Playa de Los Locos.

The salt lakes

La Mata has the privileged location of laying right next to the Lagune. Living here therefore comes with great health benefits. The positioning between the ocean and the lakes, with mountain ranges nearby, creates a unique microclimate. This is exceptionally healthy, with high concentrations of iodine and sodium in the air. It benefits problems such as skin diseases, lung diseases, rheumatoid symptoms, and general wellbeing. The WHO has gone out to say it is one of the healthiest climates in the world.
Besides that, the lakes are Torrevieja’s pride and are filled with flamingos, birds, and other wildlife. The scene is unbelievably beautiful. The lake’s colour all different kinds of purple and pink, due to the rare algae living in it. You can take a guided tour, or venture to one of the designated bathing spots.

Natural parks

1. Parc Natural De La Mata. This 3,743-hectare Mediterranean nature park features saltwater lagoons, flamingos & more. It is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, where you are surrounded by flora and fauna.
2, Parc del Molino Del Agua, located at the edge of the beach of La Mata. This beautiful nature park is named after the replica windmill that stands in it. Years ago these were used to grind salt. It is a very peaceful park, full of songbirds and greens, perfect for a picnic.
3. Parc Torre Del Moro is a small park with a café, built around the old watchtower. This well-kept park is popular with visitors, locals and also for weddings, due to its relaxing atmosphere and great views of the Mediterranean. Perfect for laying back.
4. Parc Aromatic is a tranquil, landscaped park with herbs & flowers, paved walking paths & a kids’ playground.

Services in La Mata

Torrevieja is known for its affordable and accessible amenities. The essential services are close, no matter where in Torrevieja you live. From La Mata, the University Hospital of Torrevieja is 10 minutes away, and there is a medical centre in La Mata itself. There are dentists, pharmacies, supermarkets, and postal offices all around. There is even a music academy!
Another asset of La Mata is its good public transport connections. It is easy to access the city by regular busses and taxies.
If you are looking for a hotel, we recommend Hotel Masa International for a low-rise lodging with sea views, an outdoor pool, and free breakfast. Or check out Hotel Playas De Torrevieja, for an affordable price, plus balconies with sea views, an outdoor pool, and free breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Climate and weather in La Mata

As said before, La Mata has one of the healthiest climates to live in. There is an approximate 325 sunny days a year and the average temperature stays on 18.3 °C. The summers are warm, but with cool breezes from the ocean, while the winters are mild and sunny.

The property market in La Mata

The property market in la Mata is very attractive because of the proximity to the beach, the biggest in Torrevieja. You will find mostly flat buildings, some with nice urbanizations like Molino Blanco, Cala Del Moro, and Parque Mar. These urbanizations come with sea views and many of them with an outdoor pool and parking space. A plus point is that these areas are international, with communities from all nationalities.
There are not many new build projects except for a few luxury villa developments.
At the beginning of La Mata beach, there is a nice area of villas with sea views as well as town houses in gated communities.
The properties are cheap, compared to neighbouring cities, but a bit more expensive than the ones further inland in Torrevieja. The value for your money is good in this area. There is an interest in buying properties to live in the winter and rent out in the summer. This because this area is so popular among tourists in the high-season.
