Villamartin, a tourist paradise with fantastic golf courses
Villamartin
Villamartin is a growing tourist paradise, that has become world-famous for its golf course. Due to its proximity to the coast, and generous quality amenities, it has grown to be one of the most prestigious municipalities of Orihuela Costa. This area is a popular place of second residences and holiday homes. Thanks to international communities that settled here over the past fifty years, it has transformed from a small Spanish town to a bubbling cosmopolitan city.
Location
Villamartin is an area located 4 kilometres inland on the Costa Blanca in Spain. It is part of Alicante Province and falls under the jurisdiction of Orihuela Town Hall. Part of Orihuela Costa, it is bordered by Los Almendros to the East, Los Dolses and ‘Campoamor Golf’ in the South, and ‘Las Colinas Golf & Country club’ to the West. Its biggest advantage is its proximity to these multiple award-winning golf courses.
Two main roads N-332 and AP-7 connect it with its neighbouring towns, as well as with the coast. Villamartin also has strong public transport links, with buses consistently running. Murcia-San Javier airport is only 20 minutes driving, with no flight traffic going over the actual town.
Villamartin Golf
Villamartin got an international name from its world-famous golf course. It’s part of the Quara group, that also includes La Finca and Las Ramblas. Villamartin Golf got designed and opened by Californian golf course architect Robert Dean Putman.
The 18 holes par 72 was opened in 1972 and has been a major success ever since. Names like Severiano Ballesteros, José María Olazabal, Ian Woosnam, and many other professional figures have played here. For almost 50 years, Villamartin Golf has proven itself to be of great class. The player community comes from all over Europe.
Many choose Villamartin for a second residence, so golf can be included in everyday life. Therefore, it is possible to play in British, German, or Scandinavian groups. A tight community of members has grown under this. Villamartin Golf makes sure there is a challenge for every level player. Many tournaments and competitions get scheduled regularly here, but the club also hosted the Mediterranean Open in 1994. They continue to host world-class tournaments, such as the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup.
The greens are of great quality and the mature vegetation provides a rich environment. The course is home to a surprising amount of wildlife. It’s built on hilly terrain, with the front nine holes in front of a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its natural environment, exciting holes, and old school golf feeling, many have chosen this club.
Villamartin Plaza
Shortly after the opening of the golf course, Villamartin Plaza got built next to it. This provided the much-needed services to the fast-growing town. Quickly it became the leisure centre and many eating facilities, as well as facilities settled there. The Spanish architecture, palm-lined streets, terracotta and music make you believe you’re in paradise. Add the exotic spices and smells of the local cuisines, and it’s understandable why visitors come from all over the world. Villamartin Plaza consists of shops and amenities, like a postal office, hairdresser, grocery store, and dance club.
The Plaza centre fills with restaurants and bars, which range from fine-dining to casual snacks and drinks. No doubt this is one of the best places to eat out. Look for the ‘Menu del dia’; the daily menu. This is offered by many restaurants during the morning and afternoon for a very low price. It includes a starter, main course, dessert and depending on the place, a coffee or drink. Thanks to the many visitors from all over the world, the plaza has many types of cuisine, in many price categories.
Our restaurant recommendations are:
- Eduardos international cuisine. They have been voted as the best restaurant in Villamartin, by diners.
They are open from 19:30 until late and offer an extensive choice in the menu.
- Argentinian and Italian steakhouse Che, for their highly praised chorizo and house red wine.
- Cafe Rock, very popular among the youth.
- Haciendo Rosalejo, for a local authentic Spanish cuisine.
- Olaf’s Monarch for their German 4-course daily menu, with, of course, the traditional Apfelstrudel.
Live entertainment
Villamartin Plaza is not only known for places to eat, but also for its spectacular live entertainment calendar. Each year during the summer, you can sit and dine at your favourite restaurant, while listening to music or even have a dance. They provide local talents and stars form out of Spain.
Plaza flats
Several flats overlook this gorgeous plaza. They are not only favoured by the central location but also look out on the mosaic-tiled square with its beautiful architecture and proximity to all services one could ask for. African Ring-Necked Parrots dominate the trees. They are popular among the locals, and sing their songs on late summer evenings. Villamartin Plaza is truly a most promising place.
Services
Villamartin has grown fast into a modern town.
Many West-European ex-pats have settled here over the last 10 years. The Golf course and Plaza are responsible for this, but also the other Golf courses and beaches nearby. ‘Campoamor Golf’ and ‘Las Ramblas’ are only minutes away and the closest beach of La Zenia is only 8 minutes driving.
The area is home to international school El Limonar, for boys and girls between three and eighteen. The closest international hospital is in Torrevieja, supported by a good public transport connection, or a quick thirteen-minute drive. Clinics, pharmacies and veterinaries can be found all over the area. Supermarkets like ALDI and Dialprix are located in central areas. Nearby you have La Zenia Boulevard, with its 150 shops and leisure facilities. The famous Salt lakes of Torrevieja, water sports options of Cabo Roig’s beaches, or the colourful Playa Flamenca street market; it’s all at your doorstep.
Climate
Villamartin has a very favourable climate. Thanks to its location in Orihuela Costa, close to the Torrevieja salt lakes and in between mountains, it enjoys a unique microclimate. The air is much cleaner and the WHO has gone out to say it’s one of the most healthy climates in the world. People who suffer from skin-, lung-, or heart diseases, thrive in this climate. Besides that, this part of Costa Blanca has 325 sunny days a year, on average.
Property market
Villamartin has a wide spectrum of properties.
Newly built, as well as second-hand properties are for sale throughout the area. Smaller urbanizations make up the area, most of them built around the plaza and golf resort: Villacosta, Eagles Nest, Montegolf, Las Filipinas, El Presidente, Los Valencias, El Galan, and Blue Lagoon.
A large amount of building land has led to the development of many new build properties, that have been popping up around the town in popular areas, such as Pau-8 and Pau-26. Here we’ll find a large collection of modern flats and detached villas.
On the golf course, we can find luxury golf properties. Villas and flats have created exclusive communities here.
The centre of Villamartin is made up mostly out of flats and townhouses for resale. These are affordable and many have been used as holiday homes over the years. Close to all amenities, this is a cheaper alternative.
The population is mixed. Communities of Nothern-Europeans and Western-Europeans have mixed in with the local Spanish people. This is ideal for second residence seekers because you get to enjoy a feeling of familiarity in the area. The different nationality leisure places are always full, even mid-winter.
