What to do in Torreta?

Salt lakes

Torreta has the advantage of being out of the city centre and next to the salt lake. This makes it a very calm and green environment, ideal for walking, hiking, or cycling. The lake itself is habited by pink flamingos and many other bird species, making it a popular place for bird-watching as well.
The lakes are Europe’s biggest salt supplier, and the pillar on which they built the city. The salty seawater refills the lakes, and over thousands of tons of salt have been won from here. Rare algae that live in the salty water give the lake its pink hue. During sunset, this can turn into all kinds of colours, and with the backdrop of mountains, it’s an unbelievable sight.
The lakes also have health-benefits. Living nearby already improves general well-being, thanks to the clean quality of air. It is a conserved area, so you’re not allowed to swim. However, you can go to designated bathing places to take a mud bath. People with psoriasis or eczema problems really benefit from this. Over the years, many people with skin, lung, or heart problems have taken refuge here.
You can take a guided tour in a train to the lakes and learn more about them. They take approximately one hour and costs between €5 and €7 It’s very informative and fun!
